Photo Blog – Improving Water Systems for Rural Communities in Nicaragua

Through the Municipal Development Program, rural communities in Nicaragua have been able to develop new water systems to improve their quality of life. Funded by USAID, the Municipal Development Program works to strengthen municipal governance and citizen involvement by empowering citizens and improving basic service delivery. The program works by helping local governments be more responsive to their citizens and develop citizen’s positive perception of their leadership.

The rural residents of Bulun 1, nearly 200 kilometers from Managua in the municipality of Santo Domingo, Chontales, celebrate the inauguration of their new water system.

The new system provides potable water to 325 inhabitants of Bulun 1.

The project was designed in close consultation with the community as part of the Municipal Development Program funded by USAID. The goal of the program is to strengthen municipal management and local governance while improving the provision of municipal services to communities.

For the first time residents of Bulun 1 have water provided directly to their homes.

The improved water quality will reduce gastrointestinal diseases of the inhabitants of Bulun I, especially among those most vulnerable to disease.

The residents of two rural communities in San Isidro inaugurate their new water system. The new system has improved the quality and quantity of water for nearly 500 residents of Winston Castillo and Monte Grande.
